I wonder . . .

Who thought skinny jeans on men were a good fashion choice?

Why would anyone get a tattoo on their face?

Why did I ever think “mall bangs” looked hot? Was it because they went so well with my spiral perm?

Why is cold coffee so disgusting, but iced coffee so delicious?

If dark chocolate and red wine are actually good for me, isn’t there a chance that scientists will someday find that chips and salsa are good for me too?

Why do fools fall in love?

How does that great big voice come out of little bitty Josh Groban?

How can “Tommy Boy” be so stupid and yet so funny?

Why can’t brownies be their own food group?

Is Finnegans Wake really a great piece of literature, or was James Joyce playing a really big joke?

Am I the only person who doesn’t find Will Ferrell funny?

Am I so unimpressed by Saturday Night Live because I’m old, or because it’s just not funny anymore?

At the end of the day, I wonder . . .

How can anyone get through a day without finding at least one reason to smile?

Author: A.J. Goode

I am a romance novelist, single mother of three, and a high school lunchlady. To be completely honest, I have no idea which of those jobs is the most rewarding and which is the biggest challenge. I love them all. I write romance novels about the kind of people who might pass me on the street every day. My characters are often hurting in some way, and need to learn to trust others in order to heal themselves. I also blog about trying to focus on writing, and about my day-to-day experiences in small-town America. I write about life. The good, the bad, and the just plain odd.

  1. I don’t find Will Ferrell funny, so you are not alone. Of course, I have never heard of him so that might explain it. But you asked a serious question: Why would anyone where socks with sandals? Well, if you had feet like mine you would understand. They have hard skin and corns, and bunyans which need to be cushioned by socks! So you have your answer. Of course, I would never wear anything that shows my feet anyway, so it probably doesn’t count.

    1. My feet are pretty ugly, to be honest. All those years of going barefoot as a kid and then another couple of decades of working on my feet . . . . all the pedicures in the world can’t make these dogs pretty!! But I still wear flip-flops. I figure if I’m going to wear sandals, I might as well go all the way!

And if you’ve never heard of Will Ferrell, well, you’re probably not missing much.

  2. I almost approached it the same way. And I have family in Michigan, and they do wonder that each April, although no one told me. I went up there for spring break last year – BIG mistake. Inches of snow still on the ground. Or even better, I’m sure there wondering why mother nature would be that cruel given the winter y’all have had!

    1. Oh, no — nobody goes TO Michigan for spring break. We all try to LEAVE the state then! gotta say, though, we have awfully pretty spring up here. That’s the only thing that makes it worth staying through the winter.

  3. This was perfect! I feel so much better, because I thought I was the only one on earth who didn’t think Wil Farrell is funny. Him and that guy Zach G-something…..

    1. Zach Galifanakis! No, I don’t really think he’s funny, but I loved him on the show Tru Calling, back before he was really famous. He was the medical examiner, and he made the character so sweet and shy and utterly loveable.

  4. “If dark chocolate and red wine are actually good for me, isn’t there a chance that scientists will someday find that chips and salsa are good for me too?” I think they will and then I will be the proactive one who knew it all along. Great questions!!

  5. LOL! Well I don’t plan on watching that new movie with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart because it looks ridiculous and both of them seem a bit over the top in their stardom. But I absolutely LOVE Will Ferrell as Elf. Ice Cream should be it’s own necessary food group too.

  6. You gave me that smile! The “Why do Michiganders always act so surprised when it snows in April after a week of 80-degree weather in March?” is applicable to sooooo many places. My Instagram feed is flooded with photos posted by startled-by-the-snowy-weather folk. So, thank you. As for Will Ferrell – I absolutely loved him in Elf. I didn’t think I would as I don’t find him all that funny on the whole. My son – should he read this – would be so annoyed with me. He adores him. So I’m thinking WF is a guy thing.

  7. Love it! And SNL just isn’t funny any longer. I miss the old SNL!! Also, mall bangs were awesome with the perm and skinny jeans on men -YUCK. I also don’t get the trend right now where young guys grow these really long ugly scraggly beards. Gross!
